Posted Oct 18, 2012 (Patch 5.1.0)These goggles reveal some additional nodes for anyone who has them in their inventory. No matter they're an engineer or not. It's only a few additional nodes, most of the numers say something between 5-10% more.
Edit: I posted a screenshot of such a node. They've got some light mist floating around them. That's how they can be recognised.
